Iverson hurt as Sixers rip Lakers

Guard has a chip fracture in left thumb
By CELESTE E. WHITTAKER
Courier-Post Staff
PHILADELPHIA
On the plus side, the 76ers defeated the Lakers 108-91 Tuesday night. On the negative side, guard Allen Iverson suffered a chip fracture in his left thumb.
Iverson was fitted with a hard cast and will be re-evaluated Friday. His status is day-to-day and no surgery will be required at this time.
In his postgame interview after he scored 36 points on 10-for-22 shooting and had nine assists and five rebounds, Iverson had an ice pack on the
hand.
Asked when he had injured it, he said, "I have no idea, I just know it was in the second half."
Iverson had just had an X-ray done, but was unaware of the results at that point.
Afterward, Iverson sat at his locker surrounded by team physician Jack McPhilemy, team director of sports medicine Jim McNulty and assistant general manager Tony DiLeo. He had his head buried in his arms as they talked to one another and appeared very upset as he headed to the showers.
However, he wasn't made available to the media again.
One game after playing hardly any defense in a lopsided loss to Toronto where the Raptors hit an NBA-record 21 3-pointers, the Sixers turned the heat up on that end of the floor and earned the victory over the Lakers (32-31).
Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who attended high school at nearby Lower Merion, had 16 points in the first quarter, but scored just four points the rest of the way, finishing with 20 on 6-for-15 shooting, three rebounds and two assists. Sixers rookie Andre Iguodala (15 points) and backup guard Aaron McKie did a nice defensive job on Bryant.ADVERTISEMENT - CLICK TO ENLARGE OR VISIT WEBSITE

"It's a win," Iverson said. "It made me feel good. Any win makes me feel good. That's the way you draw it up. That's the way you want it to be. You get blown out like that, you want to come back and win the basketball game, regardless if it's by one point or 20 points. You just want to win it. Fortunately, we (were) able to win it, and win it big."
The Lakers, coming off a loss to Washington Monday night, would get as close as 13 in the fourth quarter, but the Sixers (31-33) held on. Ex-Sixer Jumaine Jones had 14 points for the Lakers.
The Sixers, who improved to 23-8 when they score 100 or more points, shot 44.9 percent from the field and held the Lakers to 36.7 percent shooting.
After starting 0-for-6 in the first half with no points, Sixers forward Kyle Korver finished with 14 points on 4-for-14 shooting and seven rebounds. Rodney Rogers (11 points) and John Salmons (10 points) were also in double figures. Sixers forward Chris Webber was just 2-for-8 with five points, five assists and seven rebounds in 33 minutes.
"A really good effort by our guys at both ends of the court," Sixers coach Jim O'Brien said. "When you can hold a team with that many weapons to under 37 percent . . . I thought we were in an offensive attack mentality because we were holding them down, we were challenging shots and we were able to get out on the break. I thought we passed the ball well."
Hometown hero: Elissa Boory of Cherry Hill was the 76ers Hometown Hero for Tuesday's game.
Elissa and her husband Eric have a 10-year-old son Seth, who was diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome, the most common inherited cause of mental impairment.
Elissa founded the Cure Fragile X Foundation, a non-profit organization, which has raised nearly $600,000 over the past five years through various charity events.
